Term 4, Week 8

Hi Folks,

We can’t believe the end of the year is upon us already! We just have a couple of things to bring to your attention…

Library Books

Please return all library books and take home readers to the classroom as soon as possible for stocktake.

Bags

Please clean out your child’s blue bag and school bag as we will start sending things home soon. If you have a shopping bag that you could send in, that would be very helpful too.

P&F

This Friday straight after school the P&F will be hosting a sausage sizzle in the playground and you are most welcome to attend.

Chapel

This Friday, JLC E will be leading Chapel.  It will be at 2.30pm instead of our usual 9am if you would like to join us for a bit of a Christmas celebration.

More information will follow regarding activities for the last week of school.

Thanks, and have a great week!

JLC Teachers

Happy Fathers’ Day

New Unit of Inquiry

This week we started our new unit of inquiry. We will be inquiring into the history of our local community and how things have changed, through the theme of Where we are in place and time. Our central idea is “Local communities change over time”.  To help children understand this we would like to do an excursion down the main street of Hahndorf next week.

We will be looking for parent volunteers to take small groups along Hahndorf Main Street to identify historical building and facts.

These are the following times we are looking for helpers:

Mrs Kruger- Thursday 6th September at 9am

Mr Eckermann – Thursday 6th September

Mrs Schultz – Friday 7th September (after chapel)

Please email or contact your class teacher if you have a current police check and mandatory reporting certificate and are interested in helping out.

Lobethal Excursion

On the 10th of September we will be having an excursion to Lobethal Church Museum and consent forms will be sent out later next week.

Swimming

Classes will send out their own personalised swimming information in the next week or two.

Show

We are not having a school Show Day this year. However, it would be very helpful for us if you could let us know via email if you are planning to take your child to the Show on a school day.

Wishing all of the dads a really, truly, incredibly happy and relaxing Fathers’ Day.  You all deserve it!

Welcome Back

We hope you have had a lovely break and looking forward to term 3. The first two weeks will be booked up with concert and we are very excited to perform in front of our families. A note will be sent home later in the week explaining how concert week will work.

Costumes

If you could please bring in all items and costume requirements by Thursday it would be most appreciated. If you are unsure about this please contact your classroom teacher.

Student Teacher

Mrs Kruger’s class is lucky enough to have a student teacher working with them this term. Mrs Natasha de Lacy will be here until week 8.

Concert booking

Please find below the link to the Concert Ticket Booking site. The concert is FREE but we need you to book your tickets so that we can monitor numbers especially for the Evening Performance.

Week 6 Update

Uniform
Winter is here and so all students should now be wearing winter uniform. As a reminder, boys should now be wearing long pants only with their formal uniform, and girls their full winter uniform with the option of long pants. On Sport Uniform days, students have the choice of wearing shorts or school track pants.
Scarves may be worn but must be navy or white in colour and all jackets must be school navy only. A St Michael’s logo jacket is available for purchase from the Uniform Shop.
Please refer to the Uniform Policy on the school website for further details.

Spelling Words
Next week we will not be having a weekly spelling sound due to the fact of a long weekend. This will be a great chance to do some extra reading. Last week we talked about early warning signs and keeping ourselves safe. This week’s Home Learning has some important discussion questions that families could use to promote discussions.

Showcase
Our Showcase is fast approaching so we will be releasing the booking schedule this Friday. An email will be sent to families notifying them on how to book one 30 minute time slot. If you don’t receive an email by Tuesday 12th of June please contact Lee-Anne in the front office.
Showcase is an opportunity for you to see the work your child has completed in our Who we are unit of inquiry.

Australian Lutheran World Service

In Christian Studies we have been learning about how we can serve others, or help a friend in need. We have been reading stories about how Jesus helped others or stories that demonstrated people helping each other. Today Julie from Australian Lutheran World Service came and spoke to the children at chapel and to the JLC on ways we can help people in poorer countries.

The classes came up with some interesting ways we can help out poorer neighbours (Cambodia). This may prompt some discussions around your tea table tonight.

Week 3

What a busy week we have had learning about unhealthy and healthy foods. The classes have been very interested in finding out what makes food unhealthy. We would like to create a Healthy Recipe Wall outside Mr Eckermann room. If you have a great recipe that you would like to share with the school community please send it along with your child.

In maths this term we will be covering time, money and measurement (length and mass). These are great things to practice at home.
E.g. Use tape measures/rulers to measure objects inside your house.
Do some cooking and use kitchen scales to weigh ingredients.
Count coins or use money at a shop to buy things.
Use shopping catalogues and money to make values of food products.
Read an analogue clock every half hour or quarter hour.
